Course Synopsis

The morning foundational module of th e Course is intended to introduce experts and lawyers to the legal framework for Expert Evidence both in Singapore and internationally.  Amongst other things, the Course will cover:

The Course will include both lectures on materials to be provided as well as discussions led by the instructors b ased on actual legal cases as well as their personal experiences in dealing with expert evidence both in Singapore and internationally.

Although meant as an introduction to the legal aspec ts of the appointment of experts for disputes work and the expert’s duties and obligations, practicing experts and lawyers may also find the Course us eful as a refresher on the intricacies of expert evidence.  

In the afternoon, we will feature an optional Specialist Track specifically designed for architects and led by Architect Darren Benger who will share his experiences acting as an expert witness in various architecturally-related disputes, in litigation, arbitr ation and strata title board matters.

Darren will address various expert-witness topics from the perspective of a n Architect within a construction-industry context, seeking to address ques tions that Architects intending to act as expert witnesses would be asking.   This section will be conducted using adult learning strategies including technology for live interaction and breakout group discussions.

Flexible Attendance Options

For this intake of the Course, participants will have the option to:

  2. Attend the full-day Course in hybrid fo rmat, i.e. Foundational Module virtually and Architect Specialist Track in person; OR
  3. Attend the Architect Specialist Track in-person; OR

Completion of the Course< /strong>

To complete the Course successfully and be awarded with a Certificate of Completion, a candidate must:

Prof. Leslie Chew SC is the foundi ng and current Dean of the School of Law at the Singapore University of Soc ial Sciences.  He has practiced law in one form or another for over 4 decad es.  He was appointed Senior Counsel in 2000.  In 2007 he was appointed a j udge in the State Courts where he remained until his retirement in 2014.  A t the State Courts he was the Senior District Judge leading the Civil Justi ce Division.  He retired from the judiciary in 2014. Upon his retirement fr om the Singapore Legal Service, he returned to law practice. Currently, he is a Consultant at Peter Low Chambers LLC.  He has an active practice as an arbitrator in International Commercial Arbitrations

 

Dr. You Chuanman - Senior Lecturer, School of Law, Singapore University of Social Sciences

Dr Chuanman You is currently a Sen ior Lecturer at the School of Law, Singapore University of Social Sciences, where he specialises in the areas of corporate and financial regulation, l aw and artificial intelligence, data and platform governance, geopolitics a nd global sanctions. He was appointed as a Council Member of the Law Societ y of Shenzhen, China (2024-2029).
Prior to joi ning SUSS Law, Dr You has worked at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (Sh enzhen), National University of Singapore, Singapore Management University, and Tel Aviv University. Dr You obtained his PhD from England focusing on comparative takeover regulation and path dependency theory. He additionally holds a Master Degree in Law and Economics (EMLE) from Germany, an MPhil i n Law and History and an LLB in Civil and Commercial Law from China. Dr You has published extensively in leading academic outlets, including the Journ al of Business Law, Computer Law & Security Review, and the Capital Mar kets Law Journal. Frequently featured in international media such as Bloomb erg, the Wall Street Journal, and the South China Morning Post, Dr You is r ecognised for his expertise in China’s evolving regulatory environment. He regularly presents at global conferences on issues ranging from financial t echnology and platform governance to cross-border mergers and acquisitions.

 

Ar. Darren Benger - Committee Member, Asia Pacific Institute of Experts; Managing Director, VivATA Singapore

Darren received his Bachelor of A rchitecture degree with First Class Honours from the University of Adelaide , Australia in 1995, and registered with the Board of Architects, Singapore in 2001. In respect of architectural practice, Darren is also a Registered Inspector for fire safety, a Design-for Safety Professional/trainer and a Universal Design Assessor.
Since 1996 Darren has resided in Singapore , and he is currently Managing Director of the architectural practice VivAT A Pte Ltd and served as an elected member of the Board Of Architects, Singa pore, for the 2023/24 term. Darren is also involved in the Singapore Instit ute of Architects, including election to Council from 2007 to 2021. He has actively participated in various SIA committees, including the Building Con tracts Committee as well as the Architectural Practice Committee and ADR Co mmittee (which he also chaired at various stages). Darren is listed on SIA' s panels of Arbitrators and Expert Determinators. In respect of constructio n law and alternative dispute resolution, Darren served on the Council of t he Society of Construction Law (Singapore), including as chairman for the 2 014-15 term. Darren is also a Fellow of the Singapore Institute of Arbitrat ors, and attained the Graduate Certificate in International Arbitration fro m NUS in 2011.
Darren has acted as an Expert Witness in various arbit ration, litigation and strata-title-board matters. He is pleased and honour ed to be elected to the APIEx Committee for the 2025/26 term
